|
The effort to contain the illness of the deadly yellow fever received an increase today with the launching of a "Initiative of the yellow Fever" sustained by a 58 contribution of million of dollars of the GAVI alliance. Thrown during the assembly of the World Health that meets currently in Geneva, the new initiative will support the special immunization run campaign in one dozen West African countries to high risk of epidemics of the yellow fever.
Between the 1940s and 1960s, the campaigns of the mass vaccination spilled in some African countries had nearly resulted in the disappearance complete from yellow Fever. However, as the campaigns of immunization decreased, a generation of people grew without immunity to the illness, and by the 1990s the number of yearly cases had increased to an estimated 200 000 per year, with 30 000 deaths, and the first urban demonstrations began to occur.
The yellow Fever had come back like a major curse and, as the urbanization progresses through Africa, the threat of one major epidemic handlooms never again big. For example, THAT estimates that what the very transferable illness could infect around a third of an urban population, or until 4.5 million people, in Lagos, only Nigeria.
Now, thanks to the $58m GAVI Alliance subsidy, immunization against yellow Fever will be begun kick. On the next four years, the 12 countries of higher burden of the world everything of that is in Africa Ouest will be capable to make efficient the special vaccination run campaign to immunize more 48 million of people.
"The initiative is a groundbreaker of a lot of perspectives. Immunization usual existing program of the children of the target. If we make immunization of the usual child only for yellow Fever, we would have need that the decades reduce the risk of epidemics and the international extent of the illness", said Dr David Heymann THAT Auxiliary Director-General for the Communicable Illnesses.
However, "now thanks to the subsidy generous of GAVI, him 'Initiative of the yellow Fever' will be capable to vaccinate the to-risk populations and therefore quickly reduced the risk of first devastating demonstrations that could threaten the region and the world otherwise. With this initiative, we will work in the short - and long-term to fortify systems of the fundamental medical care in the most vulnerable region of the world - Africa", Dr Mike Ryan added, Director of the THAT Department of epidemic and Universal Alert and Answer (EPR) in Geneva.
"The yellow fever is a particularly dangerous illness that kills until 50 percent those with stern illness. Every age group is to risk, and the vaccination is our crucial weapon to warn the cases and epidemics. With the GAVI Alliance contribution, the affected countries have an exceptional opportunity, and the responsibility, to protect their populations", said Michel Zaffran, Deputy Secrétaire de direction in the GAVI alliance, in to announce the GAVI contribution. GAVI committed to work with all our partners, the two globally and in the field, to assure the success of the initiative of the yellow Fever in Africa".
Until now, the vaccine was often too expensive for the countries to have the means when made face with a host of health problems in competition and cover estimates in some West African countries is seriously low. In Nigeria, for example, the rate of the cover in 2005 was an estimated 36%. However, it is recommended that, to stop infections of the yellow Fever to spread in an epidemic, the cover of immunization must be at least 60-80%.
"Immunization against yellow Fever is now all more critical because of movements of the population increased in Africa. As we see more of people that displace to the cities for work, but to come back from time to time to their farming villages, we also see the possibility of epidemics of the yellow Fever multiplying", said Dr Sylvie Briand, Director of the Project of the initiative of the yellow Fever in Whom is Department EPR.
A campaign of the recent vaccination in Togo showed like, under the umbrella of the "Initiative of the yellow Fever", it is quickly and efficiently possible to reach distant populations even and prevent cases isolated to spread in an epidemic therefore. In December 2006, THAT received notification of three cases of yellow Fever in Togo of the north. As the last vaccination of mass there had taken place in 1987, the population has been considered very susceptible. Per February 2007, the Ministry of Togo of Health and THAT, with financial support of GAVI and the Humanitarian Office of the European order (ECHO), and with the technical support of UNICEF and several NGOs, had vaccinated more 1.5 million of people. A similar country has been led then in two districts to Togo of the south after two cases of yellow Fever had been returned there at the end of January.
The subsidy of GAVI to the initiative of the yellow Fever will cover the 12 countries that are to the highest yellow Fever risk - Benin, Burkina, Cameroon, of Ivory Coast, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, the Sierra Leone and Togo - and will help to create a stock of 11 million of vaccine doses. In the structure of the initiative, the 12 Member Declares and THAT will identify some specific populations of the target to vaccinate, with the goal of considerate first demonstrations and leading epidemics, and therefore cover of the increasing immunization.
About yellow Fever
The yellow Fever is a sharp, haemorrhagic, viral illness that is transmitted to the human beings by the infected mosquitos. The infection can result where in none to stern illness; 20-50% of those with stern illness will die of the illness. The association continues to take new members.
